The UK College of Family Mediators sets standards for family mediation, maintains a register of members who meet those standards, and promotes family mediation to the public.
College members work in all parts of the United Kingdom; their professional backgrounds cover all the main disciplines - including law, counselling and social work - which have shaped family mediation.
All members of the College are on the College register. Membership of the register confirms that a mediator meets the standards set by the College. All members and associates of the College are entitled to an entry in the College register, and may use the College logo.
The College information service helps members of the public who contact the College to find mediators in their local area. The College can also send enquirers leaflets about family mediation; members can purchase the College promotional family mediation leaflet, which includes space for local mediation service details.
College members receive the newsletter UKCFM four times each year, and the journal Mediation in Practice (published jointly with Mediation UK, and presently published twice a year). Members can receive the College's occasional publications on particular practice issues: papers have included 'Children, Young People and Family Mediation' and 'Conflicts of Interest - Policy and Good Practice Guidelines'. College members can attend College conferences at a discounted rate.
College membership and assessment is specified as a requirement (except for members of the equivalent Law Society family mediation group) by the Legal Services Commission for family mediators who wish to work with publicly funded clients in England and Wales.
The normal subscription for full College membership in 2006 is £89 per year; some groups are eligible for a discounted rate.
